It
is the beliefs of the Jehovah Witnesses that Jesus is less than God (Jehovah).
In fact they believe that Jesus is the archangel Michael. The Bible teaches
differently however and I will attempt to prove this to you.
In
order that you know that what the apostles wrote was true and completely understood
by them, I quote the following verses from the Bible:
Luke
24:44-48
And
he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I
was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the
law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning
me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the
scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ
to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his
name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
And ye are witnesses of these things.
According
to the Bible, the apostles now understood the scriptures as well as the reasons for all the events that took place and why they
happened. It is therefore safe to assume that if anyone were to understand the
nature of Jesus, it would be these selfsame apostles. With this understanding in mind let's
have a look at what they have to say about Jesus.
GODS
CHURCH:
Acts
20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the
which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God,
which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Acts,
written by Luke, describes the events immediately following the ascension of
Jesus to heaven. In it Luke writes that the church is the church of God and that
GOD purchased it with His own blood. Since
it was Jesus who shed His blood for us, this reference to God purchasing the
church with His own blood can only apply to Jesus and therefore Jesus is God.
WHO'S
THE SAVIOUR?
The
Bible states quite clearly that the Saviour is God and that He is the only one:
Isaiah
43:11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
Isaiah
45:15 Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the
Saviour.
However,
even knowing this, the apostles write the following.
John
4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for
we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ,
the Saviour of the world.
Philippians
3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the
Saviour,
the Lord Jesus Christ:
2 Timothy 1:10 But is now made manifest by
the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished
death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
Titus 1:4 To Titus, mine own son after the
common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ our Saviour.
They
wrote this even though they were aware that in Isaiah, God expressly declares that
He is the saviour and besides Him there is NO saviour.
If
only God is the only saviour, the very God of Israel, then Jesus must be God.
For indeed we have seen that Jesus is the saviour of the world. Since
the Father is also called the saviour (Luke
1:47) we are left with the
dilemma of having two saviours when there can be only one (Isaiah
43:11).
This dilemma is solved when the Trinity is taken into account. The Trinity is
covered in another essay.
WORSHIP
GOD ONLY.
Throughout the
Bible, worship is considered sacred and only meant for God.
In revelations we read that not even the angels will accept worship (Revelations
22:8-9) for they are our fellow servants. The Old Testament of the Bible shows the God is a jealous God
(Exodus 34:14) and we are to worship only Him. Even
Jesus, while incarnate, said to Satan that we should worship only God.
Matthew
4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou
shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Luke
4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is
written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
(Note:
Jesus did not say that He was not God, only that Satan should worship God
only.)
If
we are to serve God only, how
then do you reconcile the fact that Jesus was and is worshipped without
reprimand or correction (Matthew
28:9,10)?
Jesus even tells us to pray to Him in His name and since prayer is
one of the greatest forms of worship, this would be a sin coming from anyone but
God.
John
14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the
works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he
do; because I go unto my Father.
John
14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do,
that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John
14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
These
last few verses of John are probably some of the most interesting of all. Jesus
says quite bluntly, ‘He that believeth on
me’, He did not say ‘in the
Father’ but ‘in Him’, ‘the works that I do shall he do also’. Also
just as clearly we see that Jesus says, anything you ask in Jesus’ name HE
will do it. So if we pray to Jesus then our prayers will be answered and if we
believe in Jesus we will be able to do great works.
Even
in His earthly incarnation Jesus never condemned someone for worshipping Him.
IDENTIFIED
BY AN APOSTLE
Although
Thomas doubted Jesus after the resurrection, once he handled Jesus even Thomas
recognized Him. “And
Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast
believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have
believed.” (John 20:28-29)
GOD
AS DEFINED BY ISAIAH
Isaiah
in his writings asks a question about God.
Who is like God? Who is equal to God? He then goes on to describe God as
a strong and tireless God who created the earth and is everlasting.
Isaiah
40:25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.
Isaiah
40:26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things,
that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the
greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
Isaiah
40:27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the
LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
Isaiah
40:28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting
God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not,
neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
From
these verses we can extract the following points.
|
It
is asked, who is like God? |
|
It
is asked, who is equal to God? |
|
God
is an everlasting God. |
|
God
is the Creator of the ends of the earth. |
1:Who
is like God?
Colossians
1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of
sins:
Colossians
1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God...
It
is by Jesus that we have redemption through the blood and so this passage speaks
of Jesus.
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been
so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that
hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us
the Father?
2:Who
is equal to God? In Philippians we read that Jesus did not believe it wrong to consider
Himself equal with God.
Philippians
2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Philippians
2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with
God:
3:Isaiah also said that God was ‘the Creator of the
ends of the earth’. The Bible teaches that Jesus created everything.
John
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God.
John
1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
John
1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made
that was made.
In
verse 14 of John chapter 1 we see that Jesus is the Word that was with
God and was God and that nothing that was made was made without Him. Also in
Colossians it says this of Jesus:
Colossians
1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness
of sins:
Colossians
1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Colossians
1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are
in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions,
or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Colossians
1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
4:Is
Jesus eternal? The Bible has this to say about Jesus:
Revelation 22:12 And,
behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man
according as his work shall be.
Revelation 22:13 I
am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Revelation
1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also
which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.
Even so, Amen.
Revelation
1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,
which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Alpha and Omega
are described in the Harper's Bible Dictionary as follows:
Alpha : (al'fuh),
the first letter of the Greek alphabet. In Revelation, God (1:8; 21:6) and
Jesus (22:13) are called "the Alpha and the Omega", meaning the
first and the last ... God was present at the first (Gen. 1:1-2:24; Ps. 90:2)
and Jesus was also from the beginning (John 1:1-3)...
Omega : (oh-may'guh),
the long "O" sound and the last letter in the Greek alphabet. It
thus came to mean "last". It is used symbolically with alpha (the
first letter in the Greek alphabet) in Revelation to refer to God and Christ
(1:8; 21:6; 22:13)
Both
are "First and Last", "Alpha and Omega" and "Beginning
and End". From this we can see that both God and Jesus have the same
beginning and end. Jesus is just as eternal as the Father.
Conclusion:
It
is clear from just these few passages that:
|
Jesus
is Like God (Colossians 1:15, John
14:9) |
|
Jesus is equal with God
(Philippians
2:6) |
|
Jesus
created all
things (Colossians
1:16, John 1:3)
|
|
Jesus
is eternal. (Revelation
22:13, Revelation 1:8) |
As to Isaiah’s question of who is
equal with God, who is
eternal and who has created the earth, Jesus Christ is all these things and this
answers Isaiah's question.
Therefore Jesus is God.
Please
understand that although this study shows Jesus to be God, I believe that the
Father and the Holy Spirit are also God. All three of which consist of the same
essence and nature and share the same attributes but at the same time are
separate in function and activity. I believe that although they can act separately
they exist as one God and not three separate Gods. For a more thorough study of
this belief, known as Trinity, please see the essay "The Trinity".
