Saved by Works?
Are we saved by our faith in Jesus
Christ, or by our works? Has not Jesus paid our debt for us? If so then why do
many cults insist that we must work for our salvation? Put aside for a moment
the teachings of man and let us look at what the word of God has to say. The
Holy Bible is especially clear on this point and so I leave it to you as the
reader to decide.
Ephesians
2:8 & 9
For
by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is
the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Romans
3:27
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the
law of faith.
Galatians
2:16
Knowing
that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus
Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the
faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law
shall no flesh be justified.
Galatians
3:1-25
(Paul
to the Galatians on the matter salvation and whether it be by faith or law
(works).)
O
foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth,
before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among
you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the
law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit,
are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in vain?
if it be yet in vain. {so many: or, so great} He therefore that
ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it
by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Even as Abraham believed
God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. {accounted: or, imputed}
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of
Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen
through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee
shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with
faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the
curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all
things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
But
that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident:
for, The just shall live by faith.
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us:
for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the
blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we
might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Brethren, I speak after
the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be
confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. {covenant: or, testament} Now
to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as
of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that
the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was
four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the
promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is
no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed
should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels
in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but
God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for
if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness
should have been by the law.
But
the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus
Christ might be given to them that believe.
But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which
should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to
bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But
after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Romans
4:5
But
to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his
faith is counted for righteousness.
Hebrews 11:1-40
Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
{substance: or, ground, or, confidence} For by it the elders obtained a good
report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of
God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By
faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he
obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it
he being dead yet speaketh. {yet...: or, is yet spoken of} By faith Enoch was
translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had
translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he
pleased God.
But
without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh
to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that
diligently seek him. By
faith
Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared
an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and
became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. {moved...: or, being wary}
By
faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive
for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
By
faith
he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in
tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he
looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Through
faith
also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a
child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as
the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore
innumerable. These all died
in
faith,
not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were
persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were
strangers and pilgrims on the earth. {in faith: Gr. according to faith} For they
that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if
they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they
might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country,
that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for
he hath prepared for them a city.
By
faith
Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the
promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in
Isaac shall thy seed be called: {of: or, to} Accounting that God was able
to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in
a figure.
By
faith
Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
By
faith
Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning
upon the top of his staff.
By
faith
Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel;
and gave commandment concerning his bones. {made...: or, remembered}
By
faith
Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he
was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
By
faith
Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's
daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to
enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ
greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the
recompence of the reward. {of Christ: or, for Christ}
By
faith
he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing
him who is invisible.
Through
faith
he
kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the
firstborn should touch them.
By
faith
they
passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying
to do were drowned.
By
faith
the
walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
By
faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received
the spies with peace. {that...: or, that were disobedient} And what shall I more
say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of
Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of
the prophets: Who
through
faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths
of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of
weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies
of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were
tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better
resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea,
moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder,
were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and
goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not
worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens
and caves of the earth.
And
these all, having obtained a good report through faith,
received not the
promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us
should not be made perfect. {provided: or, foreseen}
The
Lord Jesus Christ paid for our sins when he died on the cross, our debt is paid
in full, and therefore there is no need to work for salvation. It is a gift to
all who accept Jesus Christ by faith. The moment you accept this gift, the
moment we believe that Jesus is our savior, and ask for forgiveness, we are saved. Jesus taught us that
He has paid the price for our salvation, a price that no man could hope to pay.
Why
then does James talk about faith being dead without works? Does this not mean
that works are what’s important? The truth is that a Christian with faith will
also do works
because we are reborn. Our works will attest to our faith in Jesus Christ for we
do as He taught us to do, not for ourselves but for the glory of God. In
everything God is first and therefore we do these works by our faith, secure in
the knowledge that it is our faith in Jesus, which saves us and we are already
saved.
If
we accept Jesus and His gift of salvation, we must also accept that which He has
taught us is right to do. To turn our back on these teachings is to turn our
back on Christ. Part of Jesus’ teachings is the works we should do. If we do not do these works then we are ignoring what He has taught us.
How can we accept Christ and ignore what He taught us at the same time? We
cannot. This is what
James means by faith without works is dead.
If we have faith, we do what Jesus taught us. If we do not follow in His
footsteps then
how can we claim to have faith. As to works, the only question remaining is, what did Jesus teach?
Matthew 25:31-46
When
the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then
shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all
nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his
sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the
goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye
blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye
gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I
was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall
the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee?
or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee
in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison,
and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say
unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on
the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for
the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was
thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in:
naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then
shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or
athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister
unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as
ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life
eternal.
This does not mean we need to spend our lives hunting
for people to help, not that it would be a bad thing, but what is important, is
to remember that when the opportunity arises to do these things, we do
them.
Salvation is not dependant on
works, rather, works are a result of faith. Salvation, however, is a gift to
those who have faith and profess Jesus as their Saviour.
One of the greatest signs we have that we are
saved by faith is in the following verses:
Luke 23:39-43
And
one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be
Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost
not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed
justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done
nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into
thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou
be with me in paradise.
Having
no good works and without the opportunity to make amends, this criminal, who was
dying on a cross for his crimes, cried out in faith, admitting his sin and proclaimed the name of
Jesus as Lord. Because of this he was forgiven and dwells with Jesus in
paradise. The Lord knows the heart of those who cry out to Him for forgiveness
and He will forgive immediately those who are sincere. We continue to show our
sincerity to God, by the way we live our lives from that moment on (Our works).
